Kayaking with Dolphins
We stopped at Byron Bay on Sunday for a "Kayaking with the Dolphins" adventure. The kayaking with dolphins turned more into a kayaking with whales. After we were outfitted, we headed out from the beach, made our way through the surf, and then paddled about 2 miles out from shore. We sat in our kayaks, awaiting the arrival of the dolphins, while peacefully riding approximately 6 foot high swells. We did see a few dolphins, but not very many. Then the whales showed up. They swam into the area where our group's kayaks were sitting, swam in and out among the kayaks, and were just doing their whale thing: swimming, rolling, coming up and diving back in the water, blowing through their spouts, etc. It was incredible just sitting in the kayaks, watching these whales in our midst. We watched for awhile, then something interesting happened. One of the kayaks in our group began to sway as the people in the kayak lost their balance, and their kayak was about to tip over. So the kayak guide yelled at them in a very stern voice, saying: "Sit down and be still. I do NOT want you in the water right now. You have no idea of the size of the sharks that follow these whales." Ummm, really? Can we go back now? All in all, despite learning of the dangerous creatures lurking beneath us, it was an awesome experience.
